September 2025 SouthLight Spotlight

September 22, 2025

September is a special month at SouthLight as we observe “National Recovery Month.”  It’s a time to recognize and celebrate individuals in—and working toward—recovery from mental health and substance use disorders. When education, access to resources, community, family, and peer support come together, recovery IS possible.

Recovery Celebration 2025 Brings Connection, Support, and Smiles

On September 9, our largest and most successful Recovery Celebration brought together over 600 clients, staff, and community partners.

More than just a fun hot dog cookout, the event links those receiving mental health and substance use services at SouthLight with essential community resources, critical supplies, and information about local programs.

“Every individual we support is valued, celebrated, and cared for, says Jennifer Whitfield, Chief Program Officer. “I can’t think of a better way to show our clients and the community the respect and encouragement that happens daily than events such as this, where we all come together!”

(Guess how many people received haircuts from the Wake Tech School of Barbering! Click the link below for more.)

Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this event possible:

Our special blog this month focuses on the recovery journey—acknowledging that it is not easy. How do we take those bumps in the road and reframe them as part of the recovery journey, rather than end-of-the-road setbacks?

Read the real stories of addiction and mental health struggles from those who’ve walked the road, along with insights, lessons, and messages of hope. And we encourage you to share this with friends and family.

“These people are amazing to put this together. Sometimes that’s what people need. They need to know that somebody cares, and SouthLight cares, and this recovery day really makes an impact and a really positive difference in my life.”
