For the people who need our substance use and mental health services, there is no doubt that Medicaid expansion has been both a lifeline and a lifesaver. Here at SouthLight, we’ve doubled our reach—from 1,000 unique individuals per month to 2,000. Clients are not only showing up; they’re also getting more frequent and comprehensive care than ever before. But changes are coming to Medicaid that could threaten our forward progress.   

The Future of Medicaid Funding is Uncertain 

The current landscape is shifting rapidly. SouthLight is facing a $2-4 million revenue shortfall in the coming year. State-level decisions will now determine the true sustainability of Medicaid expansion support.      

This is More Than a Policy Debate 

It’s about real people: People who have endured trauma, addiction, and systemic barriers; people who, without Medicaid, will lose access to the care that’s helped them survive.

Connecting Through Service and Generosity 

This fall, we’ve had the privilege of connecting with local faith groups who have stepped up to support SouthLight’s clients and learn more about our mission.  

In September, White Memorial Presbyterian and Christ Church each packed 200 hygiene kits for clients. Hayes Barton United Methodist hosted a month-long supply drive and, following a presentation by SouthLight’s Beth Pfitzenmaier on emotional, mental, and spiritual health, assembled 1,000 kits. Most recently, Hayes Barton Baptist Church members packed kits with handwritten notes after a talk by SouthLight’s JoAnn Johnson.
