As we continue to grow and serve the needs of surrounding communities, we’re pleased to share that our group counseling program (known as Substance Use Intensive Outpatient Program or SAIOP) is now available in Cumberland and Harnett Counties. Through group counseling, clients in early recovery from addiction develop the skills they need to achieve stability and thrive. For three months, clients participate in nine hours of treatment each week, building a foundation for long-term recovery. They also benefit from case management to address basic needs such as housing.

“The Fayetteville program began in early February,” explains Team Lead Jasmine Smith, MS, MSW, LCSWA, LCASA. “So far, individuals participating in group counseling have unfolded their personal experiences with addiction and are realigning their identities to formulate self-determination, autonomy, and resilience. ‘If nothing changes, then nothing changes,’ is an influential phrase I use in group therapy to promote individuals’ personal growth and action plans, as well as create a foundation for long-term recovery.”
Smith continues, “This program will continue to thrive and deliver addiction treatment, transform lives, and strengthen community cohesion. We’re excited to see what our vision and mission will bring in the future.”
“I feel safe here, I can be myself and learn from others’ experiences.”

Group Counseling is also available at the SouthLight Raleigh Hub and SouthLight Durham.

The Downtown Raleigh Alliance Ambassadors are on the job seven days a week and contribute to the overall safety of the city center. SouthLight regularly connects with this group, including a recent meeting held as part of our Opioid Awareness Campaign. We spoke with them and answered questions about opioids, fentanyl, overdose, Narcan, and accessing treatment. This amazing local team works hard every day, and we’re honored to be a trusted resource.

Based on the national Veteran “Buddy Check” program, SouthLight Durham will begin holding monthly Buddy Check meetings beginning with a kick-off party on April 10. “Buddy Check is an informal gathering for veterans—a chance to sit down, share a meal, and connect with others,” shares Michael Lawlor, Peer Support Program Manager. “SouthLight will also have information available on peer support, resources, and the services we offer.”
All veterans, active military, and families are welcome!

Social workers are represented throughout SouthLight, in nearly every program, and they bring an abundance of compassion, advocacy, and expertise to their work,” reflects Kathryn Schley, LCSW, SouthLight’s Chief Strategy Officer. “It can be hard and messy and challenging⏤but also important, essential, and beautiful. And the possibilities are endless when it comes to how and where social workers impact our community.”
